In our classroom we want all students to feel welcomed and fully capable in participating in all the activities we do in our class. We believe in many situations ELL are set up to fail in classrooms because they are not given the adequate resources to achieve at the levels they are capable of. By providing the adequate resources necessary ELL can succeed in our classrooms and go beyond their own capabilities. Another issue that arises is that ELL do not understand enough English in order to participate in class. In result, teachers deem these students incapable of learning instead of realizing that the problem is simply the language barrier. In order to alleviate this in our own classrooms, we will provide students with multiple bilingual websites so as they learn in their own language, they can also learn terms in the English language.

Lesson 4: Responses & Reaction
ELL Objectives:
Modification:
ELL Objectives:
- SWBAT identify famous hurricanes from their native countries.
Modification:
- We will provide websites that are in their language so that they are able to research with their peers while comprehending the information. We will show the students how to research before they are on their own. We will also provide guidelines on how to use the computer for a research so that EL Learners can understand it. They wouldn’t be required to present it but then we might include them in a group to participate on creating a poster.
Lesson 2: What makes up a hurricane?
ELL Objectives:
- SWBAT classify the different parts of the hurricanes and label the model in their language and in English.
Modification:
- We will provide bilingual websites or books that have pictures of the different parts of the hurricanes in their language. We will provide a sample work of what we expect the model to look like. We will have the EL Learners label the parts in their language and practice writing in English. They can present their models in their native language and be assessed on the correct labels in their native language and/or English.
Lesson 3: How are hurricanes formed? How do you determine its severity?
ELL Objectives:
- SWBAT sort pictures of how hurricanes are formed in order.
Modification:
- We will provide bilingual resources about how the hurricanes are formed. We will make picture cards that are identical to the resources they are using so that they are more familiar with the pictures. They will place the pictures in order. Instead of having them write an explanation for each card, they will number them to show the order.
Lesson 4: Responses & Reaction
ELL Objectives:
- SWBAT produce a model city and explain the evacuation plan in their native language.
Modification:
- We will provide a model of an evacuation plan to provide a visual guidance. We will have the EL Learners be included in an English-speaking group. Instead of having them write an evacuation plan, we will have them draw their plan and use hand gestures to explain it.
