Differentiation Strategy
Using multiple differentiation strategies allows the students to learn the information in a variety of ways to meet their individual needs. Students will be using models, technology, books, hands-on materials, etc to learn about the hurricanes in a variety of ways. We believe that no two students come in with the same abilities, experiences, and needs. There are so many factors that contribute to a student's learning ability, however, every student is still expected to master the same concepts, skills, and material. So as teachers we must provide a variety of teaching methods to touch base with as many students as possible. It is our responsibility to make sure that all students understand the material by using differentiation strategies. By using differentiation we take into account that students come from diverse backgrounds and need a range of teaching methods. Instead of using a single teaching method we are providing differentiated instruction to best suit the interests, abilities, and learning preferences of the students.
We will be incorporating a website into one of our lessons on how hurricanes are formed. The benefits of this website is mainly that it works hand in hand with our in-class assignment. The students will be learning the different steps of how hurricanes are formed using pictures cards. This website can be used to self-check their own work and see a visual picture of each exact steps. This is using a differentiation strategy because instead of just teaching the students the different steps of how hurricanes are formed, we are providing an alternative learning aspect for students to take advantage of. It also allow students to work at their own pace if they do fall behind in the lesson. Students do not have to work at the pace of the teacher but can slowly work their way to the lesson objective. The teacher plays more of a supplementary role, catering specifically to each students needs instead of having the students adjust to the teacher.
